During the past show season Ray Currie and myself had a conversation about a certain off road vehicle that was having a problem. Ray was looking at our extensive CV selection and was intrigued by our use of them in driveshaft applications. He asked if we could help a friend of his from Campbell Racing with a vibration problem that they were having and was almost sure it was an angle issue at the transfer case. We told him, “not a problem”. Recently Nick Campbell of Campbell Racing called and we moved forward with finding a solution. The problem was that the transfer case angle was so great that the u-joint was having a problem compensating for this. The vehicle had a wicked vibration and it was also causing bolts to loosen up.
We discussed what we wanted to do and decided on using a custom 108mm high-speed CV that we had been using on other applications, and all that was needed was a flange to be made to mount the CV to the transfer case. We sent a sample and some other things to his buddy at Advanced Adapters and they went ahead and made a nice 108mm mounting flange. Nick called and gave me some dimensions and we made a 3″ 4130 chromoly shaft with the custom CV head and shipped it out. We received a call from Nick early this week and he said that it fit great, during initial testing it was as smooth at they had hoped for and that they were optimistic for the race this coming weekend. We will update this after the weekend and see how it did on its 450 mile trek…
Good luck to the team and talk to you next week!
